How to get to Valle de las Ánimas from La Paz

Three ways: public transport to Chasquipampa — the PumaKatari city bus to its last stop or the yellow-line minibus 844 — then a walk to the chain (cheapest, about an hour); a taxi or ride app from the center (60–80 Bs, about 40 minutes); or a tour with pickup at your hotel. The valley is 22 km from the center, on the south-eastern edge of the city past Zona Sur, and the access is not obvious — most people who go alone lose time finding it.

Step by step, if you go on your own

  1. Leave early — before 8 am for the light, and because the bus fills up.
  2. Take the PumaKatari to its last stop in Chasquipampa (or minibus 844), or a taxi to “Valle de las Ánimas”.
  3. At the chain, pay 10 Bs to the family who keeps the access. Ask them which way the trail goes; there is no printed map.
  4. Follow the trail to the ridge viewpoint — about an hour uphill on loose ground.
  5. Come back the same way. Do not try to cross to Palca without a guide unless you have hiked here before.

If that sounds like a lot of logistics for a half day: that is exactly what the day tour solves — pickup at your hotel at 5:30, the valley at sunrise, entrance handled, and a guide who knows the way.

Questions

Is there a gate?
A chain across the access road, where a local family collects the 10 Bs entrance — open from about 5 am to 8 pm. The pin on the map above is that chain; save it in Google Maps before you lose signal.
Is there parking, a toilet or a shop?
No, none of the three — the destination is new and still being developed. Go to the toilet before you come (the nearest is about 10 minutes away by car). On our tours the vehicle waits for you at the chain the whole time and the guide plans the toilet stop.
Can I take a taxi back?
There are no taxis at the chain. Ask your driver to wait, arrange a pickup time, or walk back to Chasquipampa for the PumaKatari or minibus 844.
