La Paz is a city in a bowl at 3,600 m, with a valley of stone spires on its edge, ten cable-car lines above it and a market where the offerings are sold. The six things worth your time, in the order we would do them: Valle de las Ánimas at sunrise, Mi Teleférico at sunset, the Witches’ Market with someone who can explain it, Calle Jaén and Plaza Murillo on foot, Valle de la Luna if you have twenty minutes, and the Illimani from Killi Killi. Two nights is the minimum; three lets you breathe.
Day 1, afternoon — arrive, sleep an hour, walk the center slowly: Plaza Murillo, Calle Jaén, a coca tea. Or our city walk at 3 pm, which ends with the cable car at sunset and is designed for a first day at altitude.
Day 2, from 5:30 am — the day tour: Valle de las Ánimas at sunrise, Valle de la Luna, Killi Killi, the market, the cable car. Back at the Witches’ Market by 3:30 with the evening free.
Day 3, if you have it — Palca Canyon in the morning, or the sunset in the valley with hot drinks on the ridge.
Questions
How many days do I need in La Paz?
Two nights minimum: one to acclimatize, one for the valley and the city. Three if you add Palca Canyon or a sunrise.
Is La Paz safe for tourists?
Like any big city: fine in daylight in the areas visitors use, official taxis at night, phone out of sight in crowded markets. Our tours pick you up at your door.
What is the one thing not to miss?
Valle de las Ánimas at first light. It is the reason this site exists, and the thing most visitors drive past without knowing it is there.
